FATHER OF THE AMERICAN NAVY

Wexford native John Barry acquired his seafaring skills near Rosslare before later emigrating to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A veteran of many battles, his most renowned naval encounter occurred off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada on May 28th, 1781, when aboard his ship, the thirty-six-gun frigate, Alliance, Barry took on, and defeated, two British ships, the Atlanta and the Trespassy. Following his death, the American Congress erected a $50,000 monument to his memory in Washington DC.
