POLITICIAN

Charles James Haughey was first elected to the Dáil in 1957 and he held his seat until 1992. As a member of the Fianna Fáil political party, he served in numerous ministerial positions and as minister for finance in 1966, he introduced free travel and subsidised electricity for senior citizens. In 1979 Haughey was appointed Taoiseach and a decade later he established the highly successful International Financial Services Centre in the centre of Dublin.
