PRESIDENT OF ISRAEL

Serving in the British Army during World War II, Chaim Herzog participated in the liberation of several concentration camps whilst on active service in Germany. Immediately following the allied victory, he went to Palestine and participated in the formation of the new Jewish state. He served in many political capacities in Israel and in 1983, was elected the president of that state.
