Patrick Francis Moran left Ireland in 1842 to pursue religious studies at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome where he was a brilliant student and prodigious linguist, speaking Italian, Latin, French, German, Spanish, Irish, and Hebrew fluently.  Ordained in 1853, he followed a missionary vocation to Australia where he achieved the distinction of becoming the first Australian Cardinal.
