Blair Mayne

Blair Mayne

Upon the outbreak of World War II, Newtownards born Blair Mayne joined the Scottish Commandos but became unimpressed by the condescending nature of some of the British officers. However, Colonel David Stirling, of the Scots Guards, who wanted to establish a no-holds-barred army unit, learned of Mayne’s predicament and secured his release in order to become a founder member of the elite SAS unit of the British army. The force transferred to North Africa where Stirling was captured by Rommel’s forces, an incident which led to Mayne being promoted to commander of the SAS. A brilliant soldier, Mayne’s citation for a Victoria Cross seemingly met with approval at all junctures but was mysteriously downgraded to a DSO, an award he collected on no less than four occasions. A motion in the House of Commons in June, 2005, supported by over one hundred MPs, recognised the grave injustice incurred by Mayne who was also awarded the Legion d’Honneur, the Croix de Guerre with palm and the African Star.
