SOUTH AMERICAN SOLDIER

Having enlisted in the British army, Arthur Sandes fought at the Battle of Waterloo before leaving the British services in 1815 and sailing for Venezuela. Once in South America he took command of ‘The Black Rifles’, which eventually became known as the best regiment in Venezuelan liberator Simon Bolivar’s army, and he later led two Colombian divisions at the battle of Portete de Tarquí. With the outcome of that war decided he retired to settle in Cuenca, Ecuador where he died on September 6th, 1832.
