POLITICAL LEADER

A strong advocate of passive resistance against British rule in Ireland, Arthur Griffith led the delegation that negotiated the agreement that launched the Irish state on its independent course. He died at the age of fifty-one, in the midst of the terrible civil war which was fought over the treaty that he had signed with the British authorities.
