Alexander Turney Stewart’s mastery of the retail business saw his Lower Manhattan outlet become one of the largest department stores in the United States. In 1846, during the Great Famine, he sent a boatload of provisions to Ireland and two years later, built the three-storey Marble Palace on Broadway. Such was Stweart’s prominence in society, he was later offered the position of United States Secretary of the Treasury by President Grant.
